There are two engine sizes in both diesel and petrol-a 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre. You have to work that diesel engine though: once warm, it's quiet enough, but on the motorway it struggles to really push you along as much as you'd like.
Interior space is the biggest benefit in terms of comfort, but the ix20 also offers an absorbent ride thats well tailored to UK roads. Air-conditioning is standard regardless of trim level. The seats are supportive and firm, but not particularly plush. They're very comfortable none-the-less. Electric windows and heated door mirrors are standard in Active trim. The diesel unit is noisier at lower speeds, however.
Although still very much a volume car maker, theres little poor quality to be found inside or outside modern Hyundai products including the ix20. Build is solid and interior plastics are well finished and easy on the eye, if a little hard to the touch in places. Hyundai's profile has risen greatly since the scrappage incentive and its cars are becoming more widely accepted as serious mainstream rivals.
The ix20 's raised driving position lends itself beautifully to ease of parking and, although narrowing towards the rear, the glasshouse is large and offers good visibility with the exception of slightly intrusive A-pillars. The compact dimensions make it simple to place, steering is suitably light for town driving and manoeuvres and, in Active trim, rear parking sensors are standard.
The 1.4-litre petrol engine is the pick of the range because it's the cheapest to buy and gives eager performance. By contrast, the 1.4 diesel is best avoided. Yes, its fuel economy is vastly superior to the petrols ', but it's not particularly flexible. We haven't driven the 1.6 petrol yet, and that is available only with an automatic gearbox.
The ix20 is reasonably comfortable, although the diesel models ride is restless at low speeds. In both the petrol and diesel versions, the tall body leans quite a bit in corners, and the steering has virtually no feedback, although theres enough grip to make the ix20 feel secure.
